TWH mare is super rough!

Hello all! I have a 9 yr old TWH mare that used to be an "Amish buggy horse". For any of you that live near, or around the Amish, you know this means that she was used ALOT. She is now a riding horse, and is bombproof. However, she is ROUGH to ride! She paces and refused to canter. I have worked with her, and she is starting to canter more readily and steadily. (She would practically fall down when she would canter because she was not accustomed to doing it!) I even see her canter...

Barn Sour vs Buddy Sour

In the past I have considered barn sour and buddy sour to be the same thing and that some horses were worse about it than others because of their personality type, but Lexy is teaching me differently. She is buddy sour with Em (who is her dam...so no surprise there), but she has NEVER been barn sour. She has never rushed home or back to the trailer.

Most of you know about Claudette and her gait issues. SO-- we slow gaited, slow gaited, slow gaited all last summer. Some rides it would just KILL me not to go faster.

So-- this year - at Shawnee especially --I had to go faster to keep up and she was pretty smooth!!

Yesterday we rode a trail in our park that allows for some nice gaiting areas. Well-- "Miss Claudette"...

Appropriate Correction for ear pinning?

On the trail yesterday one of the women was riding a grey gelding that was well behaved and really didn't get in anyone's space, but Trav pinned his ears at him, which I think is unacceptable. I yanked on the reins and told him to knock it off, but I'm not sure pulling on his mouth is really the appropriate way to correct this. How do you handle ear pinning at other horses?

Trav is usually very good with other horses, but seems to have issues with greys and spotted...

I was told that she used to gait really good. But a man bought her off my friend and used her as a running horse. So now she thinks thats what I want her to do. I am a speedster, not a slow gaiting, walking all day kind of a fellow. I like to boogie on. Yesterday I had to go out with this obviously slower than I, youngster that had the prettiest little lady on his back, but slower than molasses. All day long I was waiting for the signal to boogie on and show that Turbo just how slow he really is. Did it happen, NO, not until we all stopped for a human break on the way back to camp and Turbo took the tired ole lady back to camp without us.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make my horse stand still? This is the absolute ONLY complaint I have about this boy. Other than his lack of patience, he is by far, the best horse I've ever had. I think I've asked this before on the other board but I'm hoping for some new suggestions. He will stand to mount...finally....but if I want to stop on a trail ride to socialize or want him to stand in a line up at a show....he wants no part of it. I just don't understand how...

Mud Conditioning

We took Mailibu and Turbo(alias Ace) to St Joe State Park today. Had a nice ride. Lots of mud. Very good for conditioning. Sharon has found Turbo's side pass and half pass. She was having a ball practicing both. Poor horse didn't know which side of the trail to use.
Malibu's slow gait is coming right along.
