I am no longer working and we had to lay off five people in the past two weeks. The price of lead is going way down and contractors are the first ones to go.
We still have four working but don't know for how much longer. I am going to wait til the first of the year to see if things get better, if not I will be
looking for other work.

We're just okay for now. The stock market decline has made a major impact on us as far as being able to remain retired. I'm seriously thinking about looking for a job. Steve still works parttime for AT&T and he may have to go full time (Ugh). We don't eat out much and don't travel at all except back to IN once in a great while. Last year we went home about every month. This year just twice. We still do spend money on horses and going horseback riding but that may not be much of an option next year if gas goes up again, but we don't do other vacations and I'm not willing to give up our horsey travels just yet. I'm very concerned that we will wind up just living on SS in a couple of years with all our savings gone. We fortunately don't owe anything except for our mortgage and monthly living expenses, but they seem to continually increase - such as food. It's a scarey time for sure. When we retired, we thought we would be set for life, but sadly not so. I can't seem to get my hubby to understand that we may be in big trouble. You know how those optimists are. Whenever I tell him that we need to rethink some things, all he says is that we'll be alright, but I don't really see that so much any more. Certainly bad times for lots of folks. Elaine |

Elaine-- a few of Mike's friends are/have been in your situation. So much as changed.
I also agree Elaine-- our only vacations are "horse" vacations and I'm going to keep going as long as I can. I'm really lucky I can wear shorts/jeans to work-- and Mike has a uniform-- so we don't buy many clothes. I'll cut back on other things-- I need my vacation horseback riding time!!!!!!!!! |

Debbie I'm so sorry to hear this. The area I live in has been okay so far because of farming. But I wonder if that is going to change, one of the companies
that makes biofuel went bankrupt because the high cost of grain.

Sorry to hear about your job. These are tough times for sure. It's RIF time where I work so I imagine we're all under the microscope. We lost
someone in our group of 4 last year this time. I'm sure if upper mgmt had an understanding what my group does they'd leave us alone as all the other
mgmt teams have done throughout the years. When you're so specialized and work with federal, state and Canadian regulatory bodies it's really not good
to cut back on those resources. Hey, I'm just a bozo on this bus so no one listens to me.
Times are certainly hard though, I go much less - pretty much forced to as my big truck is my daily driver. That means seeing my horse less and riding less which has been depressing this year. Let's not even talk about the skyrocketing grocery prices. I'm seriously thinking of getting a 2nd job to help pay off some annoying bills I don't like having. |

So sorry Debbie. It must be so hard to have to let folks go, and to worry about your own future as well. My husband works for the state, so I think we are OK
for now, but we sure have to be careful about expenses with costs going up like they have. No more big vacations, that's for sure.

One benefit of being retired is that I don't have to worry about losing my job. However, my retirement income is dependent on how the economy (i.e stock
market) I have to worry about my ever shrinking nest egg. "Welcome to Wal-Mart?" I hope not.

I'm VERY lucky. The company I work for has cut the manufacturing staff's hours back a bit, but they have not laid anyone off and things are starting to
pick up again for us (they did a price increase last month so all of our customers stocked up on material in August & September, so October was REALLY
slow).
I'm the only programmer on staff, and have installed enough custom software so that I have a certain measure of job security, and the company has several more systems planned. Our salaries have been frozen this year, but all hourly employees received a 2% bonus this week, so they got something. I'm told the owner still plans to give out generous Christmas bonuses, and with the price of gas under $2.00 a gallon again, I feel like I got a raise anyway. My annual review is sitting on the owner's desk now. My boss has already said he's pushing for a raise for me, but isn't sure he'll be successful. I'm not counting on anything though. Hubby and I are lucky as well. As of now, both out jobs are safe. We're very thankful that our kid's jobs are safe for now
as well. The economy is hurting so many around us. I just heard today of people giving away or selling extremely cheap seveal TWH, saddlebreds, arabs, etc.
It's just so sad.

Every time we get a statement from Sod. Sec. it says that hubby has one additional year before he can retire....and when our retirement account goes down
isntead of up, it basically means that hubby will be working until he drops. He'll be one of those dotty old professors toddling to his office every day
until he's 95....actually the school had a biology prof. who lived for years in one of the greenhouses. Eventually they moved him into a nursing home or
something so they could tear it down and build something else.
